Exactly one week in the life of a young man named Paterson of Paterson, New Jersey is presented. He lives an extremely regimented and routinized life, that routine perhaps most vividly displayed by the fact that he is able to wake up at exactly the same time every day without an alarm. That life includes eating Cheerios for breakfast, walking to work carrying his brown bag lunch packed in his lunch pail by his wife Laura, having a casual chat with his colleague Donny before he begins his shift driving the #23 Paterson bus for the local public transit company, walking home where he straightens out the exterior mailbox which somehow during the day gets knocked crooked, eating dinner with Laura and listening to her goings-on of the day, taking Laura's English bulldog Marvin - who he would admit to himself he doesn't much like - out for a walk to his neighborhood bar where he has one and only one beer before walking home with Marvin. There are day to day variations which are often the result of how certain other routines associated to him manifest themselves, such as what drama will occur in the relationship of Marie and Everett who are always at the bar together despite her always saying that they are no longer together, or in what form Laura's unique and distinctive design sense will affect Paterson's life directly or indirectly. Paterson's keen observances of what happens around him are largely the bases for the poems he writes, he constantly thinking of these and writing them in his secret notebook whenever he has a spare moment during his day. He is influenced by among others Paterson natives such as William Carlos Williams and his epic poem "Paterson". Paterson's writing are largely for himself, although Laura would like him to share more with her and the rest of the world. Something that happens to Paterson this week has the potential to knock his routinized world into a tailspin.—Huggo
Intent on investigating the truth behind Father Cristovão Ferreira's abrupt end of correspondence, the devout Portuguese Catholic priests, Sebastião Rodrigues and Francisco Garupe, set off to Japan, in 1633. In great disbelief, as the rumours of Ferreira's apostasy still echo in their minds, the zealous Jesuit missionaries try to locate their mentor, amid the bloodshed of the violent anti-Christian purges. Under those circumstances, the two men and the Japanese guide, Kichijiro, arrive in Japan, only to witness firsthand the unbearable burden of those who have a different belief in a land founded on tradition. Now--as the powerful Grand Inquisitor, Inoue, performs hideous tortures on the brave Japanese Christians--Father Rodrigues will soon have to put his faith to the ultimate test: renounce it in exchange for the prisoners' lives. There, in the ends of the world, a subtle change has begun; however, why is God's silence so deafening?—Nick Riganas

ANTHROPOID is based on the extraordinary true story of Operation Anthropoid, the World War II mission to assassinate SS General Reinhard Heydrich. The Reich's third in command after Hitler and Himmler, Heydrich was the main architect behind the Final Solution and the leader of occupying Nazi forces in Czechoslovakia whose reign of terror prompted self-exiled Czech and Slovak soldiers (played by Cillian Murphy and Jamie Dornan) to hatch a top-secret mission that would change the face of Europe forever.i—Bleecker Street
1954. Having worked as a salesman most of his adult life, Ray Kroc has been a hustler in most senses of the word. That hustling has made him the target of derision among certain circles for peddling what have ended up being more novelty or faddish than useful products, but it has also placed more than a comfortable roof in Arlington Heights, Illinois over his and his wife Ethel's heads. Ethel, however, wishes that he placed as much effort into being at home with her as he does in selling; his current job of peddling five-spindle milkshake makers for Prince Castle which has him constantly on the road going from one drive-in restaurant to another. It is because of the beefs he has with the whole drive-in experience (bad food, bad service) in constantly eating at such establishments while on the road that he becomes enthralled with the concept of McDonald's Restaurant in San Bernardino, California, owned and operated by brothers Richard McDonald and Maurice McDonald - Dick and Mac. Unlike most of Ray's customers who will only require one five-spindle milkshake maker at any given time, the McDonald brothers end up purchasing eight machines for their single restaurant. Primarily on Dick's initiative, the brothers have redesigned the whole concept of the drive-in restaurant to focus on quality food through a smaller menu of only the most popular items (hamburgers, fries, sodas), consistency in product so that customers know what to expect from time to time, change in the target market from lounging teenagers to families, and perhaps most importantly speed in having any order ready within seconds, many of these goals achievable through assembly line styled production. They had tried franchising previously, but failed in that they lost control over many of those aspects which made their San Bernardino restaurant successful. Despite believing Ray a bit off kilter (in other words, crazy), the McDonald brothers somewhat hesitantly enter into a contract with him to be their head of franchising. Ray's experience in the job is not without its problems, especially as his franchisees seem to be making more money than he is, he who is only breaking even. He is not averse to advancing ideas provided to him to get ahead - original ideas which are not his forte - he seeing the brothers as his biggest problem in they thinking small. These differences lead to a standoff between Ray and the brothers, the former who has a different goal for "his" business in profit and stoking his own ego seemingly his main priorities.—Huggo
An exploration of active volcanoes in Indonesia (Mount Sinabung), Iceland, North Korea and Ethiopia (Erta Ale), Herzog follows Volcanologist and co-director Clive Oppenheimer, who hopes to minimize the volcanoes' destructive impact. Herzog's quest is to gain an image of our origins and nature as a species. He finds that the volcano is mysterious, violent, and rapturously beautiful and instructs that "there is no single one that is not connected to a belief system."Vanuatu Archipelago, Ambrym Island. 1000 miles from Northern Australia. A string of active volcanoes. The Island bears the brunt of tropical storms as well as volcanic eruptions. Village of Endu, chief Mael Moses. The last big eruption was in 1968. The villagers believe spirits keep the fires of the volcanoes burning. The Spirits recognize the villagers but not the tourists. So tourists were banned for 3 yrs after the eruption. The lava expresses the anger of the devil. All villagers who die, go to the volcano. The ancient rituals of the villagers are being gradually lost.Mount Erebus 12500 ft above sea level. Active volcano in Antarctica. This is where Herzog met Oppenheimer for the first time 10 yrs ago. They discuss the primary philosophy behind the fascination with volcanoes. Volcanoes created life and that nothing is permanent, not even life. Herzog was on La Soufriere in 1976 on the Caribbean island of Gaudeloupe. The volcano was expected to erupt and 70,000 people were evacuated. 1 man refused to go. This man slept and sang as the volcano spewed lava.. but this was his home and he didn't want to leaveKatia and Maurice Kraft are a French couple who study volcanoes. They photograph eruptions and get very close to danger in doing so. They were killed by a lava flow in Japan. The super-heated gases released traveled at 100 miles per hour and heated to 800 degrees F.. Lake Toba, Indonesia. Oppenheimer first came here when he was 19. Indonesia has the most volcanoes in the world. Mount Sinabung erupted in 2010. Herzog and his team visited 6 yrs later, and the captured a live eruption, when it was least expected. Many monitoring stations have been set up to monitor active volcanoes in Indonesia. Babatan observatory monitors Mount Merapi, the most dangerous volcano in the world. If the volcano erupts, the observers will have no option but to retire into a bunker, that is provisioned with food and oxygen for a month. Merapi last erupted in 2010. the monitoring saved 20,000 lives. First indicators are seismic earthquakes, then distance measurements (the summit expands as the lava flows up), and the the content of sulfur Di oxide in the gases around the volcano.Indonesian royals perform ceremonies to reconcile the Goddess of the ocean with the Demon of the volcano. Annual rituals are carried out to appease the volcano and the ocean. A local farmer built a church shaped like a dove, pointing towards the Merapi, to appease the volcano. Every volcano in Indonesia is connected to a local belief system.Lake Toba is the biggest volcanic lake in the world. Formed in an eruption 74,000 yrs ago. The eruption ejected 15000 cubic Kms of ash and pumice. The biggest eruption recorded ever in Earth's history. It darkened skies globally. It almost wiped the humans out as a species, as it destroyed all tropical vegetation. Maybe 600 humans survived. To find human fossils from this period the team travels to Danakil depression in Ethiopia, 300 m below sea level, the hottest place on the planet. Temp of 120 degrees F. The depression is part of a rift travelling across East Africa. Eventually, this rift will widen and a part of Africa will detach from the mainland and drift into the ocean. Volcanoes will form.Erta Ale, is one of the 3 in the world where magma is directly exposed. A large amount of Obsidian (Volcanic glass) was ejected around the crater. Till 1980, optical surgeries were conducted with Obsidian blades, sharper than any steel. This area has attracted hominids for millions of yrs. The paleontologists working on the site have found the remains of a hominid believed to be 100,000 yrs old. The team finds bone fragments all over the desert and using computer algorithms, they triangulate a site likely to host a human skeleton. At the site, the team unearth's many skeletal pieces, coming one step closer to solving the mystery.Westman Island, Iceland. All of Iceland is volcanic and was settled just 1200 yrs ago. Volcano erupted in Heimaey in 1973. Since then there have been eruptions every yr. In 2010 Eyjafjallajökull erupted. The eruption melted the ice around the volcano, which created huge floods. Air traffic from ash clouds was disrupted for weeks. In 1783, 40 km long fissures open up in lake Laki pouring lava all over the Icelandic landscapes. The Icelanders wrote a single manuscript, embodying the significance of volcanoes in their lives. The codex was presented to the King of Denmark by an Icelandic Bishop in 17th century. Later, Denmark returned it to Iceland by putting it on their most powerful battleship and escorting it with their entire fleet.Mt Paektu, North Korea. Dormant for 1000 yrs, and on the border with China. Considered the birthplace of the Korean nation. New army recruits graduate by singing on top of Mt Paektu. North Korea invited the team for a joint exploration of Mt Paektu, but subjected them to closely controlled propaganda. The mountain itself is 5000 yrs old. It erupted 1100 yrs ago and created a crater 3 miles wide. enough pumice came out to bury the entire new York city. the entire mountain top blew up, spewing rock across China, Japan, Russia and Korea itself. Kim-Il Sung, the founding father of North Korea, established his secret police HQ at the base of the mountain, thereby appropriating its power and dynamism. The team witnesses great parades and huge dances in large stadiums, but the society itself seems empty and hollow. There are no international phone lines or internet available to the public. No radio or TV from the outside world. No cell phones and no ads anywhere. Instead govt propaganda everywhere. Everywhere, there are pics of the leaders in the vicinity of the volcano.Tanna Island, Mount Tasur in the Vanuatu archipelago. Active volcano. 3rd one exposed to magma. The volcano is worshiped as a deity by the locals. The deity is known as John Frum who is said to use the volcano as a portal to travel from Tanna to North America. the village flies the American flag and its church already had factions of the faith. The locals believe that the volcanoes with destroy the world one day.

Under guidance from manager Vicente Feola (Vincent D'Onofrio), young (just 17 years of age) Pelé (Kevin De Paula) utilizes his street football skills to lead Brazil to the World Cup in 1958 in Sweden, against the reigning Olympic champions Soviets. Brazil was lucky to qualify, has mixed race team and injuries to boot as it entered the final. They are forced the play the 17-year-old reserve. In 1950 Brazil. Edson Arantes do Nascimento (Dico) is a young boy, making a living, polishing boots. He and his buddies play football (which is made out of stolen clothes). Brazil is playing the world cup final against Uruguay. Celeste (Mariana Nunes), Pele's mother doesn't like Dico's interest in football and wants him to stick to polishing shoes and earning a living for the family (they are dirt poor). Dondinho (Seu Jorge), former footballer and father of Pelé, is more supportive. Brazil loses the 1950 final 2-1 to Uruguay. Dico promises his crying father that one day he will win the world cup for Brazil. Celeste tells Dico that Dondinho was a gifted footballer but was dropped when he hurt his knees and ended up as a janitor. While helping his mom scrub floors at a rich person's apartment, Dico hears that Waldemar De Brito (Milton Gonçalves), former Brazilian footballer and scout, is looking for players for his club. Dico wanted to be like Pele (a goalkeeper for a local club, Vasco), and Jose teases him with this nickname. The nickname sticks. José Altafini "Mazzola" (Diego Boneta) is the son of the rich family and bullies Dico. Dico shows up at the selection trials and soon, his team is up against the snobs headed by Jose. Dico's team doesn't have boots, so they steal some bags of peanuts and try to sell them to raise enough money to buy boots, but Jose sees them and gets into a fight with Dico, thwarting his plans. But his friend manages to get them some old shoes. The final match is attended by Brito. Soon Dico is down 6-0. He sees Dondinho in the audience and feels sad. Pele removes shoes. Barefoot, Pele shows his skill as Jose and his team can't even touch him, while he scores a goal. In 10 mins, Pele brings the score to 6-5, but the clock runs out. The crowd chants for Pele. Brito gives his card to Dondinho, but Celeste is dead against the idea of Pele playing football. She forces Pele to join his father as a janitor at the local hospital. The life goes out from Pele's eyes. Dondinho can sense this and trains Pele with mangoes, to keep his spark alive. Pele grows to be a teenager. One day Celeste sees them. She relents and calls Brito. Brito recruits Pele for the Santos football club. Pele is 15. He is selected for the youth team. due to the new styles of coaching, Pele's confidence is shot, and he earns a reputation for not scoring goals. He decides to leave, but Brito brings him back from the railway station.Brito tells Pele how the original football was developed as a form a martial art by African slaves who escaped their Portuguese masters. When they returned, after slavery was abolished, martial arts were outlawed and thus the Africans brought their art to football. But this art was lost in Brazil and Brita wants Pele to bring it back. In the next match, Pele abandons the formation style being forced by his coach and plays in his own way, scoring a spectacular goal. Pele is on his way and soon plays for the Junior team. Soon, he is selected for the Pro team. Pele is the top scorer even there.Jose Mazzola and Pele are both selected for the Brazilian team for the 1958 world cup. Pele is only 16. Feola (Vincent D'Onofrio), the head coach of Brazil national team at 1958 FIFA World Cup doesn't like the Ginga style as Brazil thinks it lost the 1950 world cup due to that style of play. Jose represents the modern European style. Pele's colleagues are Garrincha (Felipe Simas) and Zito (Fernando Caruso). Feola is dead against the traditional Ginga style and makes Pele promise never to revert to it. This promise is broken in the very next match, when Pele reverts to Ginga style, but ends up busting his knee in the process. It is too late to replace Pele on the team and the physio is not sure if Pele can play. Feola is criticized for allowing the Ginga street style of football in the national team.Brazil heads to the world cup after Paraguay withdrew from the qualifiers, giving Brazil a free pass. Swedes are favorites to win. Pele is under medical care by the team doctor. First match is vs Austria, which Brazil wins 2-0. The knee is still too weak, and the doctor advises Feola against playing Pele, but Feola wants the doctor the clear him. They hold England 0-0, but 3 of their star players (including Jose) are injured. The next match is against the Soviets and Feola has no choice, but to play Pele. Pele has a torrid time and is pushed around by the large Soviets and booed by the crowd. But Pele survives and plays the next match with France, the Semi-final. Half time is 1-1, but Pele is starting to find his feet. At half time Pele meets Jose and admits that Jose should play instead of him. Jose tells Pele to play with his heart, as Jose is afraid to be on the pitch, while Pele is not. Pele reverts to Ginga and scores his first goal at the world cup. Pele scores a hat-trick in the match and Brazil wins 5-1.Brazil is to meet hosts Sweden in the finals. George Raynor (Colm Meaney), the head coach of the Sweden national team at the 1958 FIFA World Cup, promises that his boys will take Pele out of the equation in the final. He calls the Brazilians undisciplined and abnormal (due to their mixed-race team). Feola tells his boys to play the Brazilian way and abandons his European formations. No team from outside Europe has ever won the world cup in Europe. The Swedes hunt Pele down and knock him around on the field. Soon, they are up 1-0. Pele spots some blacks watching the match in the last stands and is inspired. He reverts to Ginga and the Swedes can't touch him even as he engages half the team and allows his team mates to score 2 goals. Now the entire Brazilian team starts playing in Ginga harmony and they smile as they enjoy themselves. Pele scores 2 goals in the final. The crowd now applauds the Brazilians. Brazil wins 5-2.Pele was declared a national treasure in 1961. Pele and Brazil won the 1962 and 1970 world cups as well. He remains the youngest winner of world cup at 17 years, and the only player to have won 3 world cups.
In April 2010, there is no oil exploration operation in the Gulf of Mexico to compare with the Deepwater Horizon oil rig with its size or sheer depth of its drilling. However, the project for the BP oil company is beset with technical difficulties to the point where the general operational supervisor, Jimmy Harrell, and his Chief Electrical Engineer, Mike Williams, are concerned potentially dangerous trouble is brewing. Unfortunately, visiting BP executives, frustrated by the project's long delays, order curtailed site inspections and slanted system tests to make up for lost time even as Harrell, Williams and his team helplessly protest for the sake of proper safety. On April 20, the workers' fears are realized in the worst possible way when the rig's various structural and system flaws spark a catastrophic cascade of failures that would create a massive blowout and explosion that threatens them all, even as it also begins the worst environmental disaster in US history.—Kenneth Chisholm ([email protected])
